Science
Science is one of our favourite subjects in St. Margaret’s National School. Throughout the year classes are busy exploring, hypothesising and experimenting. We cover a variety of hands-on experiments based on the four strands of the curriculum.

Each class hosts a science assembly during the year and this provides an opportunity for children to showcase what they have been learning as well as teach others new and exciting science facts. Ms. Keegan is our school’s science coordinator. This page showcases all the wonderful scientific work done in our school. Read on to learn about what we have been up to since the beginning of the year.
Science Week 2023 took place on the 12th-19th November. Junior and Senior infants collaborated with Ms Keegans 1st and 2nd class to investigate the fascinating world of fingerprints. This investigation will greatly support our application towards the Curious Minds Platinum Awards 2023/24.
Computer Science Week – Hour of Code!
The Hour of Code takes place each year during Computer Science Education Week. This year it took place in December and 5th & 6th Class enjoyed exploring the world of Minecraft with the help of their teacher Mr. Gillic who has a personal interest in java programming language.
Science Week 2022
We celebrated Science Week from the 13th -20th November 2021 and explored the theme of ‘Creating our Future’ which is a continuation of last year’s theme. All classes really enjoyed tuning into the Curious Minds Shows throughout the science week and investigating various topics.
Maths Week 2022
We celebrated Maths Week this year from 17th- 21st October. Ms. Keegan who is our school science coordinator, organised a jam packed week of activities for all classes in our school.
Trip to Microsoft ‘Dream Space’
5th and 6th Class took a trip to ‘Dream Space’ in One Microsoft Place. In preparation for their visit, they pondered the questions: ‘How will the world be different in 2050?’ and ‘What would you like to be when you grow up?’.
Space Week 2022
One small step for man, one giant leap for St. Margarets NS! Our Infant classes learned all about Space through Aistear and really immersed themselves into the theme!
Planting Bulbs
To celebrate Climate Action Week and to further explore the Science Strand of Living Things, all classes in St. Margarets NS planted an assortment of tulip bulbs in our fantastic Greenhouse.
Science Blast 2022
Ms. Gorman’s 5th and 6th class students took part in the ESB Science Blast competition this year held online via Zoom. The class thought up of a question to investigate and through research and a tremendous team effort they produced a fabulous science investigation....
Computer Science Week 2021
We celebrated Computer Science Education Week this year from the 6-12th December 2021. The children developed their logistical skills, problem solving skills and creativity, through engagement with various coding games and activities. We used the fantastic selection of games provided on the Hour of Code website!
Science Week 2021
We celebrated Science Week from the 7-14th November 2021 and explored the theme of ‘Creating our Future’. The children were intrigued and excited about potential future developments in the areas of transport, school life, home life and farming.
