The children in 5th and 6th class are participating in a Battle of the Books initiative again this year in conjunction with Fingal county libraries. The programme is designed to encourage children to read, gain confidence and to discuss a common book, providing a shared experience of reading which will encourage reading for life. The children have been reading the book “When the Lights Went Out in Europe” by Rod Smith and they were excited to finally meet the author in person when he visited out school in February. The book is a historical novel for children with a story set against the background of the Great War. The children had many questions for the Rod Smith and they were enthusiastic about sharing their own knowledge of the book and it’s subject matter.
